What is the traditional method of making sushi?

Sushi dates back to the 8th century in Japan, when it was originally known as nare-zushi (“salt-cured sushi”). This traditional method of preparing sushi involves fermenting fish and rice together with salt for several months. The resulting product is then mixed with vinegar and formed into various shapes, such as balls or rolls. Today, sushi is often prepared using the nigiri-zushi method, which involves forming finger-shaped mounds of vinegared rice with a topping of fresh seafood. This contemporary method has become widely popular around the world and is commonly used in restaurants.

Whether you’re looking to explore traditional or modern sushi making techniques, there’s something for everyone to enjoy! So go ahead and give it a try – your taste buds won’t regret it!

Is sushi actually healthy?

Sushi can be a healthy option as it typically contains low amounts of fat and calories. It is also high in omega-3 fatty acids, protein and fibre. However, the health benefits of sushi depend on the type of fish used, how much wasabi you add, the quantity of rice used and whether tempura batter or other sauces are added. To ensure you’re getting the most out of your sushi, opt for rolls filled with fresh fish, skip the extra mayonnaise and soy sauce, and limit how much wasabi or pickled ginger you use. Eating sushi can be a nutritious and delicious meal when enjoyed in moderation.

There are a number of rolls that are very healthy including the cucumber roll, dragon roll, maki roll and the rainbow roll. All of which topped with the humble sesame seed, which is incredible for bone health and you have a winning combination. Perhaps a tiny bit of spicy mayo to liven it up, although they don’t necessarily need it and that’s just heaven!
